What does being the “Best Off Ice Puck” even mean?
The idea is as old as time… Being the “Best”, and for marketing professionals the adjective is solid gold. Attach it to your clients’ toilet paper and bam! You have yourself a rock solid sales pitch. What I think we all wonder is what does this mean? The answer as you may expect is complicated and complex.
Off Ice Pucks are notorious for their cool colors and interesting designs. The Xenopuck for one has the sleek look of a spaceship, whereas the pro roller pucks look like a Rook in chess. The human spirit of creativity is alive and shaping how we deal with problems in this industry.
Tangible Problems
The core issue roller pucks deal with is the playing surface. Usually, it is a road or asphalt that has lots of friction (high coefficient of friction). An example of this would be trying to use rubber pucks on asphalt. It will not work very well at all. Compare that to a Xenopucks’ slickness and the difference is nontrivial. So it is safe to say that being the “Best Off Ice Puck” will require a low coefficient of friction and the ability to slide on many different types of roads.
The next tangible problem an off ice puck faces is being durable enough to be functional. Of course there will always be wear and nothing lasts forever (not even ice pucks). Now as Xenopucks understands it, there are different levels of trauma for the roller puck.
- At the bottom is the movement of the puck upon the surface that will eat away at it over time, usually slowly.
- Next level, would be your passing and general shooting. From passes to clappers.
- Lastly, are things like hitting the post with a shot, or something worse like the jagged edge of a post screw. This kind of damage on the most durable of off ice pucks can handle. Pucks like the Xenopuck.
The durability question is a physics problem. So, it gets complex quite fast. Fortunately, experience can be quite valuable and you learn to know what pucks can withstand what. Safe to say then that the “Best Off Ice Puck” must be sturdy and lasting.
